These YCL Numeracy Courses focus exclusively on understanding number concepts including: reading, writing, ordering, counting, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication of numbers. Emphasis is placed on understanding mathematical language and providing a firm foundation from which to start the new term. The courses cover key elements of Numeracy from the NLF (Numeracy and Literacy Framework) for Wales and are taught in a past paced, highly structured manner.
9am - 10.30amThis intensive course teaches the main reading strategies required to read effectively for meaning. Pupils engage in a range of games and activities to develop their sight vocabulary and word building skills. They listen to and read a range of texts and borrow books from the YCL library. They will read aloud daily to the teacher and each other with an emphasis on reading for pleasure. Children are encouraged to discuss not just the contents of books but the themes introduced making links with their own knowledge and experience. They are introduced to both classic and modern popular texts for children. Confidence and enthusiasm are key objectives of this course.
11am - 12.30amThis course teaches a range of strategies to explore and practice spelling strategies. Children engage in activities to aid their memory of spelling patterns and apply them in their writing. They will also play games to practice the spelling of high frequency(commonly used) words. Correct spelling is reinforced through the act of looking, saying, writing and essentially understanding words in context.
Pupils will be reminded of and taught the cursive style of writing which is employed in most mainstream schools. Emphasis will be placed on: accuracy of spelling; understanding of words and how to use appropriately; extension of vocabulary.
